Radiant, founded in 2020 and headquartered in El Segundo, California, is developing what it describes as the world's first mass-produced, portable nuclear microreactor. The company's sole product, Kaleidos, is a 1 MW helium gas-cooled reactor designed to be transported to wherever power is needed. It uses HALEU fuel and TRISO fuel technology, which has been used in over 30 reactors since the 1960s, and is engineered to operate for up to five years without refueling. An air jacket enables passive cooling through natural convection, contributing to its fail-safe design.
The company plans to manufacture Kaleidos at a factory in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, with a production capacity of 50 reactors per year. A first fueled test is scheduled for 2026 at Idaho National Laboratory, with initial customer deployment targeted for 2028. The microreactor is intended to replace diesel generators across a range of applications, including industrial, emergency, and remote power generation.
Radiant's technical work spans nuclear engineering, portable reactor design, passive cooling systems, and HALEU fuel processing. The company operates from two locations: its headquarters in El Segundo and its factory site in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
