The Future of Life Institute is a nonprofit organization that works to steer transformative technology toward benefiting life and away from extreme, large-scale risks. Its work spans policy, advocacy, grantmaking, outreach, and institution-building, with a particular focus on the governance of powerful technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, biotechnology, and nuclear weapons.
The organization has a team of over 20 staff members and maintains a presence in the United States and Europe. It has convened significant conferences, including the Puerto Rico AI Conference and the Asilomar Conference, and launched influential initiatives such as the Asilomar AI Principles. The institute also engages in public outreach, including producing the viral film Slaughterbots to raise awareness about autonomous weapons.
Its activities are directed at ensuring transformative technologies are developed safely and beneficially. Through its research, policy engagement, and public communications, it addresses risks from advanced AI and other powerful technologies.
