SecureBio is a nonprofit biosecurity organization dedicated to mitigating the risk of catastrophic pandemics. Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, it pursues this mission through research and technology development across several distinct domains. Its work spans the early detection of novel pathogens, the evaluation of risks posed by artificial intelligence in biology, and the development of physical countermeasures.
The organization operates through specialized teams. The Detection Project pioneers pathogen-agnostic early warning using deep metagenomic sequencing. The AI Team develops tools to assess how AI systems might contribute to global biological risks; their evaluations have been cited by major AI companies. The Physical Defenses group focuses on far-UVC technology and pandemic-proof personal protective equipment. SecureDNA, another initiative, creates software to screen DNA synthesis orders to prevent misuse.
SecureBio grew from a project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). As a 501(c)(3) organization, it collaborates with experts from academia, industry, and government, with its research informing decisions by frontier AI companies and policymakers.
