The Allen Institute for AI (AI2) is a non-profit research institute founded in 2014 by Paul Allen. Based in Seattle, the organisation employs over 200 people and focuses on building AI intended to produce real-world impact. Its work spans foundational AI research, open models, AI for science, environmental applications, and embodied AI for robotics.
The institute operates on principles of openness, scientific rigour, impact, and collaboration. AI2 releases model weights, training data, evaluations, and code publicly. Among its notable projects are Olmo, an open large language model; Asta, a research tool for scientific applications; EarthRanger, a platform for wildlife and environmental conservation; and work in climate modelling.
AI2 works across the AI research, science, and environment sectors. Its research teams develop both foundational technologies and domain-specific applications, with an emphasis on making their work accessible to the broader research community and to organisations working on scientific and environmental challenges.
