Boeing Employees' Credit Union (BECU) is a member-owned, not-for-profit financial cooperative headquartered in Tukwila, Washington. Founded in 1935 by a small group of Boeing employees - beginning with just $9 and a $2.50 loan to help a coworker buy tools - it has grown to serve more than 1.5 million members and manages over $30 billion in assets.
As a cooperative, BECU returns earnings to its members rather than distributing profits to outside shareholders, doing so through competitive rates, lower fees, and community investment. Its financial product range covers everyday banking needs as well as more complex financial goals:
- Deposit products: checking and savings accounts
- Credit products: credit cards, auto loans, and home loans
- Wealth and planning: investment services and trust services
- Business banking for commercial members
BECU's not-for-profit structure extends into its community activities. Through the BECU Foundation, it provides community grants and scholarships, and it runs financial education programs including seminars and webinars aimed at improving members' financial well-being. The organization's stated guiding philosophy is "people helping people," reflecting its roots as a member cooperative rather than a conventional bank.
