The National Endowment for Democracy is an independent nonprofit foundation established in 1983 that funds and supports democratic institutions worldwide. Funded largely by the U.S. Congress, it distributes more than 2,000 grants annually to nongovernmental groups abroad working toward democratic goals, operating across more than 100 countries.
The organisation works across multiple dimensions of democratic development, including civil society strengthening, human rights protection, independent media support, rule of law initiatives, and support for political parties, trade unions, and business organisations. Its nongovernmental structure allows it to operate flexibly in challenging environments and respond quickly when political opportunities emerge.
Governed by a board balanced between both parties, the foundation describes itself as bipartisan and enjoys Congressional support across the political spectrum. It functions as a hub for activists, practitioners, and scholars working on democracy globally, combining grant-making with intellectual exchange and resource sharing.
