CoVar is a machine learning and artificial intelligence company that builds customized algorithms and complete engineering solutions for clients in defense, healthcare and industry. Founded in 2017, the firm works across computer vision, sensor data processing and infrared and RGB image analysis, with a particular specialism in aided and automatic target recognition (AiTR/ATR). Its work for Army AiTR researchers includes threat detection technology and one of the world's largest collections of labeled imagery, assembled in support of that programme.
Beyond defense, CoVar applies its methods to biomedical research and to the monitoring of industrial machinery. Its engagements range from basic algorithm research through to large-scale system integration, with an emphasis on deploying working systems rather than research prototypes alone. Clients include government bodies such as the U.S. Army and DARPA, and the firm is an established government and defense contractor.
The company describes its approach as mission-grade: it begins by understanding each client's specific problem and then develops tailored solutions around it. CoVar is a small R&D software organisation and operates from two offices, in Durham, North Carolina, its headquarters, and in McLean, Virginia.
