The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) educational institution founded in 1926. Operating from Williamsburg, Virginia, its mission is to preserve and interpret the colonial capital of Virginia for the public, guided by the principle "that the future may learn from the past." It manages the world's largest American history museum, encompassing cultural heritage, education, tourism, and hospitality.
The Foundation's core asset is the 301-acre Historic Area, which features 88 original 18th-century structures and 525 reconstructed buildings. This living-history site is populated by historically dressed interpreters and expert tradespeople. The institution also owns and operates several supporting facilities, including the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library, five luxury accommodations, multiple restaurants and taverns, championship golf courses, and a spa and fitness center.
The Foundation engages a substantial public audience, welcoming over 5 million in-person visitors annually and generating 20 million digital engagements each year. Its operations span cultural preservation, academic research, museum management, and extensive visitor services.
