UNCF is a national nonprofit organisation founded in 1944 that advances minority higher education through three complementary mechanisms: direct scholarship awards, operating support for historically Black colleges and universities, and advocacy for college readiness and minority education policy. Since its founding by Dr. Frederick Douglass Patterson, the organisation has helped over 550,000 students earn college degrees and has raised more than $6 billion in private support.
The scholarship programme is the organisation's largest initiative, awarding more than 11,000 scholarships annually worth approximately $62 million to eligible students. In parallel, UNCF provides critical operating funds to 37 member HBCUs, strengthening institutional capacity across the network. The organisation operates with notable operational efficiency, directing 85 cents of every dollar raised directly to student support and scholarships.
UNCF's scholarship recipients demonstrate strong completion outcomes, with a six-year graduation rate of 70 per cent - 11 percentage points higher than the national average and 31 percentage points higher than the national average for African American students. The organisation functions as both a direct funder and a policy advocate, positioning itself within the broader landscape of efforts to increase college access and completion among underrepresented populations in American higher education.
