Forterra develops autonomous mission systems for defence, with particular expertise in self-driving ground vehicles and coordinated robotic swarms. Founded in 2002, the company has secured contracts across all four U.S. Department of Defense ground autonomy programmes and achieved the first production contract for self-driving systems in the U.S. military. Its technology has been deployed across four continents and over ten countries.
The company's AutoDrive platform serves as the foundation for ground autonomy, with capabilities built and integrated through an open architecture standard called OASIS (Open Architecture Standard for Interoperable Systems). This modular ecosystem enables government and third-party developers to create capabilities without vendor lock-in, reflecting Forterra's emphasis on interoperability.
Beyond defence, Forterra has expanded into commercial applications. The company operates autonomous yard trucks for logistics centres and driverless off-highway logging vehicles for forestry operations, both engineered to function across varying weather conditions and terrain without requiring infrastructure improvements. In 2025, Forterra closed a $238 million Series C funding round, bringing its valuation to $1 billion.
