Bot Auto is a Houston-based autonomous trucking company founded in August 2023 by Dr. Xiaodi Hou, a pioneer in the field and former CEO of TuSimple. The company develops and operates Level 4 autonomous heavy trucks - capable of driving without a human operator - and brings them to market through a Transportation-as-a-Service (TaaS) model. Rather than licensing technology to carriers, Bot Auto owns and operates its own fleet, providing freight transportation directly to customers. The company emerged from stealth with $20 million in pre-A funding and a team of 76 engineers and industry veterans.
Bot Auto's trucks rely on a combination of LiDAR, radar, cameras, sensor fusion, real-time data processing, and AI-driven systems, with multiple redundancy layers built in for safety. The company has completed what it describes as Texas's first humanless hub-to-hub validation run in real traffic, and plans to launch driver-out commercial operations between Houston and San Antonio in 2025.
The company's vertically integrated approach - owning the full stack from hardware and software to fleet operations - is central to its strategy. Bot Auto cites the trucking sector's role in moving 72% of America's freight and an industry driver shortage exceeding 80,000 as key drivers behind its focus on autonomous freight operations, with emissions reduction named as an additional objective.
