The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a private philanthropic organisation founded in 2000 that deploys capital to reduce global inequities across health, education, and gender equality. With offices in Seattle, Washington D.C., India, China, Africa, and Europe, it operates in 140 countries and has invested over $102.3 billion since inception, with $8.0 billion disbursed in 2024 alone. The foundation has committed a further $200 billion over the next twenty years.
The foundation's work spans several interconnected domains. In global health, it has enabled the immunisation of 760 million children through partnerships like Gavi and supported the certification of Africa as wild polio-free. It funds innovations in portable health diagnostics and sanitation technologies designed for underserved populations. Its education and economic development programmes aim to create sustainable pathways for opportunity, whilst $2.1 billion has been mobilised specifically for gender equality initiatives.
The foundation employs 2,167 staff and operates through strategic partnerships with governments, researchers, and local communities. Its approach emphasises measurable outcomes and scalability; since its founding, global child mortality has fallen by half. Notably, the foundation has adopted a time-limited strategy, committing to sunset by 2045 once its core missions have been sufficiently advanced.
