Activeloop, founded in 2018 and a Y Combinator YC18 alum, builds Deep Lake, an open-source database for AI. Deep Lake lets teams index, search, organize and reason over large multimodal datasets - documents, images, video and more - using natural language and LLM-powered workflows. A Postgres-compatible database layer unifies multimodal streams, including video feeds, LiDAR scans and telemetry, and feeds them to GPU training pipelines. The technology spans vector search and retrieval augmented generation (RAG), high-dimensional and time-series data streaming, and data lakehouse infrastructure.
The project counts roughly 9k GitHub stars and 5m downloads, with a Slack community of more than 3,200 members. Activeloop has raised just shy of $20m in total, including an $11m Series A, and serves Fortune 500 organisations such as Bayer Radiology. Its software is applied across healthcare and radiology, biotech, legal, research and enterprise AI; deployments include a reported 18% retrieval accuracy improvement at Flagship Pioneering and an 18.5% productivity gain among lawyers at Hercules.ai and Ropers Majeski. The company works with Intel through the Intel Disruptor Program and with AWS as part of the AWS Partner Network and AWS Marketplace.
Activeloop operates from hubs in California and Yerevan, Armenia, and hires onsite from both locations, preferring to build side by side. It describes a fast-moving culture of shipping and ownership, with structured interviews run against objective criteria and transparent feedback offered to candidates on request. Salary ranges are published on every role, with annual compensation reviews, meaningful equity for all employees, and a benefits package covering medical, vision and dental insurance, life and AD&D cover, and a 401(k) plan. Mentorship, learning resources and a commitment to an inclusive team are stated parts of the working environment.
